Review: Super 8

Super 8, an amazing film written and directed by JJ Abrams and joint producer Steven Spielberg. Paramount Pictures presents a science fiction movie in august 2011that grossed over $259 million with a budget of just $50million. JJ Abrams also directed top films like Cloverfield and Star Trek so no surprise that Super 8 would be a success. The main characters are Joe Courtney (Joel Lamb), Riley Griffiths (Charles), Zach Mills (Preston), Ryan Lee (Carrie), Gabriel Basso (Martin), Kyle Chandler (Deputy Lamb) and Elle Fanning (Alice Dainard).
The movie is set in 1979 in a small town called Lilian in Ohio. In the starting scene the mise en scène shows a man changing a sign that said “Safety is our primary goal” and days since last accident was 784, to ‘Days since last accident 1’ it’s ironic how their goal is safety and yet the mill just had an accident. In the accident one of the main characters Joe Lamb’s mother dies. The father who is a Deputy in the town isn’t quite sure how to comfort his son or himself after suffering a great loss. Four months pass later Joel and his friends Charles, Preston, Carrie and Martin want to make a Super 8 zombie film also starring Joel’s crush Alice (Elle Fanning, Younger sister of actress Dakota Fanning). All six go to film their movie at midnight at a train station but while filming an old truck drives on to the tracks crashing into the oncoming train. The train crash was horrendous! Loud explosion, parts of the train flying everywhere, fire. It was amazing. As the kids try to run away from the crash they meet someone who tells them to never speak of this matter to anyone or else their whole families would be in danger. Then weird things started to happen like dogs going missing, car engines being ripped out, people going missing, what’s going on? Aliens. The six friends tries to find out what’s happening when later one of the friends get taken so the rest go on a mission to retrieve her. The military gets involved and like always take the violent path when really all the alien wants is to go home.
This is a brilliant homage to Spielberg’s movies such as The Goonies as the stars are all kids and what I think the movie resembles the most is ET because they’re both about kids finding an alien who can’t go back home then the military gets involved and tries to kill it but then the alien ends up going home. So Super 8 does mirror Spielberg’s work of film.
The acting I thought was amazing and moving for such young people. When the camera would go into close ups the actors/actresses would be so convincing and especially who I thought stood out the most was Elle Fanning (Alice) when she was sad I felt it, when she was happy I felt happy. Her performance was outstanding. I always like a funny character in every movie I watch and for me the comedic actor was Charles, one of my favourite lines was "I haven't leaned up yet; the doctor says it's going to happen" but because Riley Griffiths (Charles) looks really serious it makes it even more funny.
The film is rated at PG13 but in my opinion after watching this film I thought that age is not restricted enough because of the inappropriate language that is being used. Kids watching this would think that it is okay to swear seeing as the characters in this movie who are about 13 are allowed to use this sort of language.
Overall after watching this I would definitely recommend this movie everything was just amazing , but one thing I thought that just didn’t satisfy me was the ending it felt to quick, also there wasn’t much focus on the aliens I would have liked to know a bit more about the aliens like how did they get there, where are they from, how long have they been there, how were the aliens undetected for so long? So many questions I wish I knew because for me the movie feels too rushed at the end. But building the suspense I thought JJ Abrams was successful. I would rate this a 8 out of 10. Amazing, terrific and beautiful.
