Film reviews from Media Awards 2011

Best Year 12: Checmate
Checkmate is an astounding movie trailer that gave us all the thrills and chills a good horror should. The target audience was mainly aimed at young adults, so about 18 years or older. The trailer started with three friends going on an adventure in the woods, no lighting was being used it was all the natural light but the weather was gloomy and sort of dark which was a perfect scene setter because it gave that mysterious scary atmosphere. But it was kind of predictable that something bad was going to happen as they were in woods all by themselves but none the less it still gave me that buzz of excitement as they were getting chased. While one of the friends were getting hunted the person filming was also running so it looked like we were at the murders perspective and we could see how scared the girl was as she kept looking back at us. What I thought was cleverly done was how everything was based on a game of chess hence the name checkmate. The game was played by the mastermind of all the killings which connotes how all the murdering was one big game. This is one sick and twisted film but that the magnificence of it all.
WWW- The lighting of the mastermind came from directly under the chin which is a cliché thing to do when telling scary stories but still affective.
EBI- The sounds weren’t as good as the story. The sound is key as it can take that one step further to make a good movie to an amazing movie.

Best Year 13: Detention
Detention. A thriller based on a young attractive girl who became obsessed with one of her teachers. The teacher Mr Patel was already a married man but had an affair with one of his students, the young girl did not know that Mr Patel was married but when she found out she was filled with fury I wanted revenge. One of the shots that was affective was when the wife was washing the dishes and in the window we could see the girls faced pressed up against the glass, it was only for two seconds but still scared the heck out of me. The next scene showed the wife hiding under the table looking petrified while the crazed lunatic walks in at a low shot so we could only see her legs and her purple high heels, this showed the still attractive and sexual side of her and also it intensified the footsteps becoming louder and louder as she came closer. The scariest part was at the end. The scene was filmed under the table where the wife was hiding so it felt like we were there too hiding under the table so it put us in that same position as her, the sound was really affective too as we hear her breathing heavily and the heart beat racing to show how terrified and scared she was and it was also building up suspense when suddenly out of nowhere she gets dragged out from under the table and we hear her ear piercing screech.
WWW- the whole story line, the range of camera shots and angles were incredible.
EBI- …
